As of January 1, 2023, 1.976 million people with a foreign place of birth lived in Austria. An analysis of the Integration Fund shows this.
In 2022, the number of people moving to Austria reached a record high of 261,900 (2021: 101,700). 55.6% came from third countries; 100,700 were nationals of other EU or EFTA countries or from the UK.
A total of around 1.976 million people with a foreign place of birth lived in Austria as of January 1, 2023, 16.4 percent more than in 2018, and they now account for 21.7 percent of the total population, according to a brand-new info brochure published by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF).
According to the brochure, the most represented countries of birth are Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Turkey. The share of the population with a foreign place of birth in the total population of a federal province was highest in Vienna at 39.3 percent.
Birth rates were also polled; in Austria, regardless of origin, the average number of children per woman was 1.41 the year before. Women born in Austria give birth to 1.34 children, while immigrants have 1.63. Top: women from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, with an average of 2.77 offspring.
In the 2021/22 school year, 26.9 percent of the 1.1 million students had a first language other than German, another figure unearthed by the ÖIF. The highest percentage of children with a non-German first language was in special schools (42.9 percent), followed by polytechnic schools (37.3 percent) and new middle schools (34.1 percent). In contrast, only 21.3 percent of students at an AHS, 21.7 percent at a BHS and 14.1 percent at a vocational school had a first language other than German.
In the previous year, the overall unemployment rate across Austria was 6.3 percent. Here, immigrants (9.1 percent) were also affected more frequently than nationals (5.4 percent). According to the ÖIF, migrants also fare worse regarding net annual income. While an Austrian has an average net income of 29,254 euros, non-Austrians have only 23,800 euros.
